Ripples #1125: Take It Slower
Dec 14, 2020

PEBBLE
Life isn’t a race, so take it slower. Hear the music before your song is over.
-Gary Kunath, shared by Kelsey in Fond du Lac, WI

BOULDER
The faster we live, the less emotion is left in the world.
The slower we live, the deeper we feel the world around us.
-Stanko Abadzic, shared by Holly in Phoenix, AZ

I cringe at the thought of becoming yet another voice encouraging you to SLOW DOWN a bit, especially if you’re trying to GO GO GO so you can get everything done that needs to get done in the next few days/weeks. And trust me, I know how annoying it can be when some well-intentioned person encounters me in “hustle bustle” mode and spouts some trite, “stop and smell the roses” nonsense. Gah!

Of course, part of me knows this isn’t nonsense…and plenty of times (including like right now as you read this), I’m the one trying to whisper to someone I care about, “Is it possible that a slower pace or maybe even a brief pause might ultimately help you maximize your productivity?”

Brené Brown once shared a line she said a priest had spoken to her, “If you don’t want to burn out, stop living like you’re on fire.” Ooh, every time I’ve reviewed this line in the last few weeks, I realize more deeply just how often I operate in overdrive mode.

I am 100% okay if you need to ignore this message right now, or even roll your eyes a little. Just promise me that you’ll make an effort to balance your GO GO GO with some SLOW SLOW SLOW. Pretty please and thank you!

Peace,
Paul
P.S. I’ll be taking some down time over the next few weeks, but don’t worry: I’ve got a few weeks of Ripples all queued up and ready to go. ALSO, you may know that I’m moving our DAILY SPLASHES to a better platform that allows me to text you a quote each morning AND have easier engagement if you have a question/comment for me. It’s free, and you just text DAILY SPLASH to 513-436-6599 and follow the prompts.

Ripples #1,008: Surrounded By Safety!
Sep 17, 2018

PEBBLE
Create safe spaces for yourself. Wrap yourself in goodness and warmth and love. Stay surrounded by people who are genuine-think twice if you can’t trust them with your heart. You are allowed to protect your peace. Be mindful and aware of all energy that you allow into your life.
-Alex Elle, shared by Jennifer in Sacramento, CA

BOULDER
There comes a time in your life when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it and surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who do not…. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living.
-José N. Harris (adapted), shared by Chyral in Menomonee Falls, WI

PONDER
With the recent chaos in my life that I mentioned last week, it was so lovely to receive an outpouring of kind messages from many of you. I’ve also been depending on a deep bench of reliably supportive people in my life and they have been enormously helpful.

There’s no doubt about it: life is sometimes hard. As I read and reread Alex Elle’s encouragement to “wrap yourself in goodness and warmth and love”–I keep seeing in my mind an image of a giant sheet of bubblewrap–not a barrier that could magically prevent life’s inevitable falls, but a spiritual and emotional coating that could break the fall and cushion the landing.

If you read this and can immediately identify a few people in your life that provide goodness and warmth and love, make an extra effort to express your gratitude this week. If you’d like to surround yourself with more of the right kind of people, wander into new spaces and meet some new people this week. Ask the universe to help guide you to fresh sources of support, and be mindful of opportunities to extend support to those you encounter.

Peace,
Paul

Ripples #987: Loving All The Parts!

Ripples #987: Loving All The Parts!
April 23, 2018

PEBBLE
Be careful how you are talking to yourself because you are listening.
-Lisa M. Hayes, shared by Diane in Tuscaloosa, AL

BOULDER
Can you love your crazy?
Can you love your sane?
Can you trust your foolish heart?
Embrace your scattered brain?

Can you love your tears?
Can you love your worry?
Can you hear your darkest fears?
And listen to your fury?

Can you love your inner child?
Your body as you age?
Can you love your wild side
Release it from its cage?

If you’re thinking “NO!”
To some of the above,
Then can you love the part of you
That’s learning how to love?
-Leah Pearlman, shared by Pidge in Pacifica, CA

My dear pal Pidge recently sent me a lovely book by Leah Pearlman: Drawn Together: Uplifting Comics on the Curious Journey Through Life and Love.

The book begins with the poem above and then lightly winds its way through a series of simple-yet-whimsical drawings to illustrate the power of loving yourself, loving the people around you and loving everything about your crazy, tumultuous life.

The whole book is a delightful read, but this particular poem really struck me at potent, and I’ve been coming back to it repeatedly over the past few weeks. The last stanza grabs me every time, gently reminding me how important it is to love even the less polished parts of who I am.

I’m grateful to Pidge for gifting me with the book, to Leah Pearlman for quickly and eagerly granting permission to include the poem here, and to YOU as you hopefully continue pondering the idea of learning how to love all the parts of you.

Peace,

Paul
