Celebrating 20 Year of Ripples 1999-2019!

PEBBLE
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return.

BOULDER
Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible—it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession could.

PONDER

I love that you spend some of your precious time and energy reading and savoring these weekly splashes.

I love that you occasionally let me know when a particular issue resonates or troubles you.

I love that you forgive the typos and the quotes that don’t connect with your heart the way others do.

I love that you submit quotes to consider for future rippling.

I love that you forward Ripples on to family and friends and colleagues.

I love that you strive to put Ripples into action in ways that elevate yourself and those around you.

I love that we don’t have to agree on every single thing in order to come together for a minute every Monday morning.

I love that you open up your heart as you read them, and that you encourage me to open mine when I’m assembling them.

I love you, and I love us.

Peace,
Paul

Ripples #987: Loving All The Parts!
April 23, 2018

PEBBLE
Be careful how you are talking to yourself because you are listening.
-Lisa M. Hayes, shared by Diane in Tuscaloosa, AL

BOULDER
Can you love your crazy?
Can you love your sane?
Can you trust your foolish heart?
Embrace your scattered brain?

Can you love your tears?
Can you love your worry?
Can you hear your darkest fears?
And listen to your fury?

Can you love your inner child?
Your body as you age?
Can you love your wild side
Release it from its cage?

If you’re thinking “NO!”
To some of the above,
Then can you love the part of you
That’s learning how to love?
-Leah Pearlman, shared by Pidge in Pacifica, CA

PONDER

My dear pal Pidge recently sent me a lovely book by Leah Pearlman: Drawn Together: Uplifting Comics on the Curious Journey Through Life and Love.

The book begins with the poem above and then lightly winds its way through a series of simple-yet-whimsical drawings to illustrate the power of loving yourself, loving the people around you and loving everything about your crazy, tumultuous life.

The whole book is a delightful read, but this particular poem really struck me at potent, and I’ve been coming back to it repeatedly over the past few weeks. The last stanza grabs me every time, gently reminding me how important it is to love even the less polished parts of who I am.

I’m grateful to Pidge for gifting me with the book, to Leah Pearlman for quickly and eagerly granting permission to include the poem here, and to YOU as you hopefully continue pondering the idea of learning how to love all the parts of you.

Peace,

Paul

Our longtime readers may remember that one of our annual traditions is to focus on the theme of Love around Valentine’s Day. I appreciate that some folks aren’t big fans of this holiday, either because they perceive it at overly commercial or that it seems to leave out those who aren’t currently in a romantic relationship.

I prefer to mark the occasion by celebrating love in its broadest definition and to encourage us all to recognize the relationships that bring love into our lives: family, friends, colleagues, classmates, colleagues, pets, and even (especially?) ourselves.

Love can be arduous, complicated, elusive, scary. I can also be potent, invigorating, healing, transformative. Fully experiencing and expressing love is the most difficult and most important task we are called to do. It’s tough, and it’s worth it.

Whether or not you’re sharing love with cards or chocolates or flowers this week…please, please, please: practice love. Whenever you can, however you can, and with whomever you can!

With peace (and love!),
Paul

Ripples #951: Love & Light!

Ripples #951: Love & Light!
Aug 14, 2017

PEBBLE
Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.
-L.R. Knost, shared by Pidge in Pacifica, CA
[who has known me since we were in 5th grade and continues to be a fierce and fabulous friend. Happy Birthday, dear Pidge!]

BOULDER
Your light is seen, your heart is known, your soul is cherished by more people than you might imagine. If you knew how many others have been touched in wonderful ways by you, you would be astonished. If you knew how many people feel so much for you, you would be shocked. You are far more wonderful than you think you are. Rest with that. Rest easy with that. Breathe again. You are doing fine. More than fine. Better than fine. You’re doin’ great. So relax. And love yourself today.
-Neale Donald Walsch, shared by Regina in Glen Gardner, NJ

PONDER
Just when we think the world couldn’t get any messier or more troubling, news from North Korea, Venezuela, Charlottesville, and elsewhere proves us wrong. The challenges we’re facing are far more complex than many of us are willing to admit, and the potential solutions that will eventually help to improve things will require many people coming together with massive amounts of passion, patience, and persistence.

I don’t have the answers for how we’ll get through this, but I do have confidence that we will. The steps that we can all take right now to help us move forward involve recognizing and sharing our own reserves of love and light. First, look in the mirror and ponder the compliments that have been shared by people that have told you how important and precious you are to them. Marinate in that love and light. Then look around and identify the people you cross paths with on a regular basis that YOU respect, admire, and/or value. And tell them what they mean to you. Let them marinate in love and light.

If you’re feeling especially adventurous, the next step could be to identify some people you *struggle* to respect, admire, and/or value to see if any of them deserve reconsideration. Maybe you haven’t sufficiently appreciated how or why their perspective is so different than your own, or you haven’t even gotten to know them well enough to understand what their perspective really is all about. At least think about it, and see if you can allow them to marinate in love and light, too.

These might seem like small steps, but small changes in how you think and feel can lead to small changes in your behavior. And it is all of our little actions that can ripple out to change the world.

Sending you Love & Light,
Paul

Ripples #925: Love’s Shine!

Ripples #925: Love’s Shine!
Feb 13, 2017

PEBBLE
Love’s shine is strongest against a backdrop of hate. What we care about, and how we express our care, is most deeply felt when all is not “as it should be”. That’s when love matters most and moves most.
-Melanie Goble, written and shared by Melanie from Cal Poly SLO

BOULDER
To feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life. But to feel affection that comes from those whom we do not know, from those unknown to us, who are watching over our sleep and solitude, over our dangers and our weaknesses – that is something still greater and more beautiful because it widens out the boundaries of our being and unites all living things.
-Pablo Neruda, shared by Brett in Madison, WI
PONDER
Unleashing a LOVE-themed Ripples around Valentine’s Day is one of our longest traditions, and it has always been important to me that we focus on the broadest concept of love that allows us to move beyond romance and celebrate the love that exists among friends, family, colleagues, neighbors…and even beyond humans to include pets, nature, etc. We’ve also made an extra effort to encourage self-love as a powerful healing force directed within and toward your own precious spirit.

In these tumultuous times, I think it is crucial that we extend our idea of love even further. I’m ready to embrace a love so expansive that it encapsulates humanity and reminds us that we really are all connected to each other, and I hope you’re ready for that as well. I truly believe that at least part of the solution for our current difficulties is to cultivate and strengthen the love we feel for each other, particularly towards those with whom we struggle to understand and agree.

I’m not necessarily talking about liking or understanding or accepting or agreeing or forgiving (although I do happen to think our society improves whenever we experiment a bit with these as well); instead, I’m curious whether small doses of compassion, empathy and patience, shared mindfully in the right direction at the right time, might help us all feel better, think more clearly, and identify opportunities for constructive conversations and connections. While it cannot and should not eliminate the important and necessary conflict we’re experiencing in our world right now, I believe LOVE’S SHINE could help us illuminate a path forward, and might just end up saving us all.

Peace,

Paul

Ripples #872: Love Blooms!
Feb 8, 2016

PEBBLE
Love is misunderstood to be an emotion.
Actually, it is a state of awareness,
a way of being in the world,
a way of seeing oneself & others.
-David Hawkins, shared by Isaac in Sedona, AZ

BOULDER
Love is the real power. It’s the energy that cherishes. The more you work with that energy, the more you will see how people respond naturally to it, and the more you will want to use it. It brings out your creativity, and helps everyone around you flower. Your children, the people you work with – everyone blooms.
-Marion Woodman, shared by Leslie in Madison, WI

PONDER
Every year when Valentine’s Day rolls around, I like to explore the theme of love. I’ve always taken great care to avoid focusing solely on (or even primarily on) romantic love. And I understand that plenty of people aren’t fans of V-day either because it over-glorifies coupling and/or because it over-commercializes what is supposed to be an intimate, personal connection.

I get that, and I’ve always tried to help us think of “big picture” love; over the years, we’ve taken turns pondering self-love, friend-love, work-love, and even pet-love. Of course you are welcome to completely ignore the day if that feels right for you, but I would truly love it if you’d consider the challenge of this week’s quotes and embrace the opportunity to unleash love in a meaningful way: toward yourself, toward those around you or toward the world. #LoveBlooms

The one thing we can never get enough of is love.

-Henry Miller, shared by Tracy in Pasadena, CA

BOULDER
Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.
-Thomas Merton, shared by Philip in Wichita, KS

I know that Valentine’s Day isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and of course you have options you can celebrate it, ignore it, or curse it as you see fit.

I tend to welcome it as an opportunity to consider love in all its variations, choosing from among several targets of love: romance, friends, family, pets, self, nature, etc. I think both of our quotes this week invite us to expand our capacity to both give and receive love. I hope you accept this invitation, and I hope it helps you grow.

PEBBLE:

Do not seek perfection in a changing world.
Instead, perfect your love.
-Master Sengstan, shared by Rebecca in Chicago, IL

BOULDER:

I think the biggest disease the world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved. I know that I can [sometimes only] give love for a minute, for half an hour, for a day, for a month, but I can give. I am very happy to do that, I want to do that.
-Princess Diana, shared by Isaac in Sedona, AZ

PONDER:

Let’s face it: some people love Valentine’s Day, and some people don’t.

As someone who has been single much of my life, I can certainly relate to people who feel like this holiday exists merely to reinforce a message that a successful life requires being coupled (It doesn’t, by the way. For reals.)  Other people see it as too commercialized for any glimmer of goodness to peek through.  To help make the second week of February more palatable for everyone, I’ve often used a “Ripples of Love” theme and expanded beyond romantic love to include family/friend love, self-love and even the more expansive loves of humanity, earth, spirit, etc.

I hope you can PERFECT YOUR LOVE this week by recognizing, savoring, and expressing all the love that exists in your heart and in your life.

Peace,
Paul

BOULDER:
Love is always bestowed as a gift-
freely, willingly,

We don’t love to be loved;
we love to love.
-Leo F. Buscaglia

PONDER:
Over the past 14 years of sending out Ripples, we’ve often chosen a “love” theme for the second week of February even though not everyone *loves* Valentine’s Day. In previous issues I’ve repeatedly suggested we focus less on the “buy your sweetie some candy” aspect of what some may view as a contrived holiday, and instead ponder the extraordinary opportunities that exist in recognizing and appreciating love.

Look beyond your Facebook relationship status and notice who, or what, has allowed love to flourish in your heart this year AND what connections might improve if you shared more love. Whether it is a romantic connection, family member, friend, colleague, neighbor, pet, or maybe even a favorite tree in your favorite park, do something to honor LOVE this week.

Peace,
Paul
P.S. I hope you love receiving Ripples as much as I love coordinating them. I love it, and I love you, too!… Read More!

BOULDER:
Hatred and bitterness
can never cure the disease of fear;
only love can do that.
Hatred paralyzes life;
love releases it.
Hatred confuses life;
love harmonizes it.
Hatred darkens life;
love illuminates it.

PONDER:
As our nation pauses to reflect on the contributions of Dr. King AND to recognize President Obama’s second inauguration, I pray that we can all aspire to find the courage for compassionate engagement in the challenging policy discussions around guns, budgets, civil rights, and other issues of the day. Sometimes there is so much that divides us that we seem to forget how much we have in common. It takes patience, humility, and LOTS of courage to focus first on how another person sees things; the result can often open hearts and minds, making it easier to then illuminate your own perspective.

Please, I urge you to commit to some action this week that will help illuminate our community and diminish the shadows. Think it, feel it, and DO IT!
