Ripples #854: Soul Smiles!
Oct 5, 2015

PEBBLE
Feeling passionate about something is like getting a peek at your soul smiling back at you.
-Amanda Medinger, shared by Thomas in Fort Myers, FL
BOULDER
It is up to us to find the joy that dissolves the desperate moment, that changes the burden of life to the passion. Find the gift that brings that joy in your life and nurture it and guard it and grow it. And when you can, find the gift in others and urge them toward it.
-David Smith, shared by Debbie in Vista, CA
PONDER
We’ve explored the topic of passion a few times over the years, but I was re-inspired by these recent quote submissions AND because my buddies at Rowan University recently asked me to refresh one of my favorite presentations, “The Archeology of Passion: Excavating Your Enthusiasm for Work & Life.”

I describe passion as creating consistent action toward a well-defined purpose while in an enriching environment. I believe that most people have deep reserves of passion that can either remain hidden without the proper inspiration and/or get buried under years of frustration and setbacks. The key is to identify activities that engage you most deeply and then determine what direction/purpose these activities may be suggesting for you. It can also be worthwhile to experiment with the frequency and consistency that you spend on these activities to see if it might help fuel your enthusiasm.

If the people you spend time with tend to drain you rather than nourish you, it might be useful to spend a few more minutes with those people you’ve already identified as energy-infusers AND try making some new connections to see if that might bring some fresh energy to your school, work, and/or life. I also like to remind people that you don’t have to completely eliminate those people who you find draining, because in some cases you either don’t have a choice about having them in your life OR there remains some positive aspects to the connection. Instead of dumping them, try just reducing the number of minutes you’re exposed to their toxicity.

Whether you’re just exploring your passions or attempting to excavate them, I hope you embrace any opportunities you encounter that might help you unleash your enthusiasm. The world needs your energy and I’m sure of it because, well: you’re here!

Peace,
Paul

Ripples #779: Our Puzzle, Your Piece.
For our tribe of busy people who believe in
unleashing Ripples of compassion & kindness: uRock!

PEBBLE:
There are no extra pieces in the universe.
Everyone is here because he or she has a place to fill,
and every piece must fit itself into the big jigsaw puzzle.
-Deepak Chopra

BOULDER:
When we feel passion for something,
it is because we are remembering what
it was that we came here to do.
The more passion we feel,
the more in alignment with Source we are,
allowing this energy to pour through us
with no hesitation.
This is the way it was meant to be.
-Karen Bishop

PONDER:
So yeah, folks: it turns out that we need your particular piece of this vast and wacky puzzle of life.  Keep your eyes and your heart open for the projects that make you feel most alive, and be curious about how that may be leading you to fulfill the highest version of your purpose here on earth.  If you’re having trouble identifying these passions, notice what you long for, what you daydream about, even what movies, books, and people you’re drawn to.  Perhaps keeping track of these in a journal can lead you to recognizing the shape and texture of your particular puzzle piece.

Speaking of your piece of this puzzle, I need a big favor to help keep the Ripples flowing. I used to be a little better about encouraging people to submit awesome quotes so that Ripples could continue being a group effort, and while a few loyal ripplers still occasionally pitch in, I find that I need a regular stream of fresh inspiration to unleash the ripply magic.  I would absolutely love it if a few dozen of you spent a few minutes digging up a couple of fresh and fabulous quotes that speak to you.  Ideally, you would share who said/wrote the words along with your first name and hometown so I can included, “shared by Linda in Manhattan, KS”.  Are you in?  Please, be in.

Peace,

Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping… waiting…and though unwanted… unbidden… it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace… but we would be hollow… Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead.
-Angel (character on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), submitted by Leah P., Wisconsin

In some of my presentations I describe passion as PURPOSE in ACTION, taking place in an enriching ENVIRONMENT.

In order to be successful in any specific endeavor (project, class, job, school, life) You need to have a PURPOSE: a well-defined mission or set of objectives, and you need to set that purpose in motion through ACTION. In order to sustain your passion, that “purpose in action” must take place in the right ENVIRONMENT, a place where you and your purpose can be encouraged, nurtured, and supported.

Perhaps this week you can take a look at your life in general, or maybe one specific project or component of your work/school/life, and examine it to see how well you have defined its PURPOSE, how consistently and effectively you are taking ACTION, and how supportive your environment is. Perhaps you can tweak one or more of the three components and watch your PASSION emit more sparks!

I’ve packed up some moxie and I’m ready for an ecstatic experience on the uROCK! Roadtrip! I’ve loaded my camera and some paper & markers into my smile-covered Prius so I can raise a few hundred SMILES to match all the MILES I’ll drive in the next few weeks. If you’re in Indianapolis or Bloomington, Indiana OR Cincinnati, Ohio, I’ll hopefully see you at a Ripples MeetUp this week!

I’d love it if you kept up with the journey here: http://uROCKroadtrip.com (and you can always submit a photo of your smiling face holding an encouraging sign…I’ll post it with the others!). I’ll be giving short updates via Twitter and my Facebook Status. I’ll strive to do blog entries every few days; mostly I’ll carry the spirit of Ripples with me everywhere I go and try very hard to stay present and savor every moment of my journey!

In the meantime, I hope YOU can add some MOXIE to your life this week!

This week I enjoyed a quick trip to Des Moines to spend a day with some corporate trainers from around the state of Iowa. We spent some time exploring how to pursue our passions so I thought it would be a great week to encourage us ALL to spend some time and energy pursuing our passions.

Whether it is in your job, with your family/friends, on a service project, or around a hobby/leisure activity that you enjoy, I hope you can spend a few more minutes this week enjoying your GREAT PASSIONS! I am indescribably lucky that one of my greatest passions is this “electronic postcard” that you are now reading, and I thank you for taking 60 seconds each Monday to pause and ponder. I hope you know that my passion is fed every time you pass Ripples on to a friend/colleague, submit a quote, and especially when you act on an idea that came to you after reading an issue.

Enjoy Ripples, enjoy your great passions, and please make sure you ENJOY TODAY!

Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily.

I’m back on the road, and this week I spent some time helping K-12 educators get geared up for another year at the John Muir Academy in Lodi WI, and then returned to western North Carolina to help the new students at UNC-Asheville start their year off on a positive note.

For many of us, the fall means “back to school and/or work,” and therefore becomes a fantastic opportunity to create a fresh start. Is there some skill or habit or attitude that you would like to acquire? If so, this might be an ideal time to INVENT YOURSELF even if your life doesn’t revolve around an academic calendar. Maya Angelou’s words above warn us that if we do not take charge of the process, someone else may very well come along and doing the inventing. I prefer to have YOU be in charge of YOU, and I will be in charge of ME!

On your mark, get set, INVENT!

I made my annual trek to New Hampshire this week to help Plymouth State University’s new students and their parents prepare for their upcoming adventures. While there, I bipped over to Vermont to visit my friend Maura and say hello to the mountains.

Spending time with new students allowed me the opportunity to challenge them to explore a variety of possibilities before choosing a career they will love (I compare it to eating at a buffet–on the first round try a little of everything and THEN go back to focus on the things you really liked.)

Spending time with Maura, who also makes her living as an educational consultant and leadership trainer, allowed me an opportunity to acknowledge the joy I feel when I’m on the job. She remains humble about the success in her work while celebrating her discovery of meaningful work that she deeply enjoys–and it rubs off on me. After every visit, I discover new heights of job satisfaction!

I hope that each week you are spending at least a few hours doing what you love. Some of us find it in our work and others seek it in their studies, hobbies, and/or community service. If you have it, ENJOY IT! If you’re still seeking it, KEEP UP THE QUEST!
