Ripples #1091: Nurturing Health
April 20, 2020

PEBBLE
Keeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos––the trees, the clouds, everything.
–Thich Nhat Hanh, shared by TK in Milwaukee, WI

BOULDER
Doctors won’t make you healthy.
Nutritionists won’t make you slim.
Teachers won’t make you smart.
Gurus won’t make you calm.
Mentors won’t make you rich.
Trainers won’t make you fit.
Ultimately, you have to take responsibility.
Save yourself.
-Naval Ravikant

PONDER
It is hard to believe that six weeks have passed since I returned from vacation just in time to craft the first Covid-related Ripples (#1086 What’s Happening? https://mailchi.mp/unleashripples/r1086). A week later in Ripples #1087 (https://mailchi.mp/unleashripples/rr1087) we unveiled our WE GOT THIS sticker (https://bit.ly/WGT-Doc), created as an invitation to focus on four strategies that we’ve been steadily unpacking here in the last few weeks: curious minds (https://mailchi.mp/unleashripples/rr1088), open hearts (https://mailchi.mp/unleashripples/r1089), calm spirits (https://mailchi.mp/unleashripples/r1090), and nurturing our health. I sheepishly confess that I still recall being concerned that all of this focus on Covid might seem irrelevant by the time we would get to the final topic of the series.

Our health is foundational to every aspect of our lives: work, school, relationships, just everything. And given the unique challenges of living through a global pandemic, tending to our health is absolutely crucial. I shared this quote (https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Kjg51D6Pb/) with my online buddies: “In the dream, a wise one whispered, ‘If there is a chance you’ll soon fall ill, anything you do in the coming days to bolster your health will matter.'”

My intent is to help us all remember that even though we don’t have complete control over whether this pesky virus finds us, there *are* practical steps we can take to minimize the chance we get sick, to minimize the impact if we do get sick, and to minimize the impact on our health care system which still needs our help.

Over the past several years, the U.S. Army has transformed Tom Rath’s Eat Move Sleep (http://www.eatmovesleep.org) into the “Performance Triad” (https://p3.amedd.army.mil/what-leaders-need-to-know/what-is-the-performance-triad): a laser focus on sleep, activity, and nutrition as three cornerstones to maximizing health and wellbeing. I’ve revisited these often in the last few weeks, assessing my choices and habits to make adjustments that will bolster my health. I invite you to do the same, since even a few minor tweaks would be beneficial to you, the people you care about, and our society at large.

My plan in the coming weeks is to broaden our attention to the typical variety of topics we explore in these weekly splashes. I also wanted to let you know I’ve been field testing a one-hour online presentation that was inspired by our “Covid Coping” series. I’ve re-imagined it as “Ripples of Resilience: Surviving, Reviving, and Thriving Amidst Challenge & Change.” If you’re interested in spending an hour with me and a few dozen fellow Ripplers, send an email to ROR@2Rpl.me and I’ll get you some information.

Peace,
Paul

Ripples #949: Slight Adjustments!

Ripples #949: Slight Adjustments!
July 31, 2017

PEBBLE
We take almost all of the decisive steps in our lives as a result of slight inner adjustments of which we are barely conscious.
-W.G. Sebald, another great find by Leslie in Madison, WI (who has been scrounging up fabulous Pebbles & Boulders since our first year of Rippling…way back in 1999!)

BOULDER
Your life is like Tetris. Stop playing it like chess. It’s choosing, on a fundamental level. It’s taking these random experiences as they slowly fall down the screen of life and rotating them 360 degrees; moving them two rows left and three to the right; examining them from new vantage points so as to make them fit into the grander mosaic of our lives. Tetris, not chess. If you think you’re in checkmate, you can choose to flip the table and play something else.
-Jeremy Mathurin, 2016 Hamilton College student commencement speaker

PONDER

It can be tempting to daydream about the BIG shifts that we think would improve our lives: if only we could snag that dream job/house/relationship or radically improve the country/world/universe. Whenever I find myself lost in those daydreams, I try to remind myself that while the big changes sound exciting and life-altering, it is the myriad small decisions we make each day that have a more significant impact on our lives.

Studying for the mid-terms and showing up for the final exam are essential, of course, but your daily decisions about whether to go to class and how many minutes you’ll study have a far bigger impact on your academic success. It’s important to go to the dentist a few times a year, but the bigger impact on your dental health are the daily decisions you make about whether to brush and floss. And while relationships can be deepened or destroyed by single events, most of our cherished connections are made by lots of small deposits: texts and chats and lunches and walks and such.

Let’s make this week about recognizing and seizing the small, everyday choices we have available to us, and explore how these SLIGHT ADJUSTMENTS might expand our options and improve our outlook.

Peace,

Paul

Ripples #919: The Future is Present.

Ripples #919: The Future is Present.
Jan 2, 2017

PEBBLE
Those whose hope is strong see and cherish all signs of new life and are ready every moment to help the birth of that which is ready to be born.
-Erich Fromm, shared by Bea in Vero Beach, FL

BOULDER
The future has no bigger moments than we experience right now. The world changes for the better with every act of kindness, and for the worse with every act of cruelty. The future is nothing grander than the very next moment, and it arrives solely from the present.
-Bo Lozoff, shared by Jessie in Burbank, CA

PONDER
Another year has ended, and a fresh one has begun. Many people have commented that 2016 was a particularly difficult one, and plenty of us are more than a little concerned that 2017 contains potential for even more challenges (or at the very least more uncertainty), than any year in recent memory.

Because I’m determined to be a reliable source of light in what may be troubling times, I’ve been busy prepping and pondering over the last few months. One useful activity has been a careful reading of Rebecca Solnit’s powerful book, “Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities” written in response to earlier darkness in our young century when so many people were feeling hopeless because of our country’s decision to go to war in Iraq. She has helped me reconsider how I perceive hope, which Solnit suggests is less like “a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch” and instead more like “an ax you break down doors with in an emergency.” Her comment about hope’s predictive power also struck me as potent: “Hope just means that another world might be possible, not promised, not guaranteed.”

I’m not sure what 2017 will hold, but I do know that it will unfold just as all the previous years: one day at a time. And I’m confident there will be some good days and there will be some bad days and there will be lots and lots (and lots) of in between days that will have a mix of options for joy and opportunities to grow. And, just like before, our capacity to create a more palatable future depends to a great degree on our ability to focus on that which we can control (or least influence), rather than becoming hypnotized by fixating on the forces beyond our control.

I invite you to spend some time reflecting on the most optimistic version of the successes you would like to experience this year, and identifying what actions you’ll need to cultivate and/or extinguish in order to manifest your dreams into reality.

Peace,
Paul

Ripples #775: Planting Seeds.
For our tribe of busy people who believe in
unleashing Ripples of compassion & kindness: uRock!
31 Mar 2014

PEBBLE:
Don’t judge each day
by the harvest you reap,
but by the seeds that you plant.
-Robert Louis Stevenson, shared by Edna in Oxon Hill, MD

BOULDER:
Every thought is a seed.
If you plant crab apples,
don’t count on harvesting
Golden Delicious.
-Bill Meyer, shared by Amy in Charlotte, NC

PONDER:
While spring takes its sweet time to rev up to full speed, I thought maybe you and I could spend some time this week considering what seeds we could plant now to ensure a bountiful harvest later on:

1.  We could plant some kindness with friends or strangers that will sprout karmic blooms just when we need some brightness to appear in our life.

2.  Another option could involve planting some discipline in the form of hard work on a project that has been ignored; the rich harvest of success will taste sooo good even if the work isn’t as enjoyable as play time.

3.  Finally, we could decide to plant some acorns of forgiveness, letting our soul release long-stored hard feelings towards a person or event from the past.  By putting these deep in the ground, they can begin a slow yet powerful transformation from painful memories into sturdy reminders that we often grow stronger from the tough stuff.  Acorns become oaks.

unleashing Ripples of compassion & kindness: uRock!
18 Nov 2013

PEBBLE:
be passionate about your dreams
don’t sway off the intended course
you may run out of gas at times
let hope be your driving force
-written and shared by Marie Toole in Delray Beach, FL

BOULDER:
Dreams are renewable.
No matter what our age
or condition,
there are still
untapped possibilities within us
and new beauty waiting to be born.
-Dr. Dale Turner, shared by Pete in Sedona, AZ

PONDER:
Do you have any persistent daydreams that you haven’t taken any action on?  Have you discarded any dreams because they seemed too big or too unlikely or too difficult or just too *something* for you to believe and act on them?

I think we all need to review our past dreams and check for any new sparks of inspiration or energy that could renew a dream, and perhaps upgrade it to a dare.

Peace,
Paul

Several hundred Ripplers will graduate from high school or college in the
coming weeks (including my niece—you go, Jamie, YOU GO!) and while some of
the have determined their next steps, others are pondering, “What’s next?”
Defining a purpose for your life provides a direction for your journey, and
that direction is useful even though you may eventually alter the course.
Whether we’ll be wearing a cap and gown or not, perhaps we can all pause
and reflect on our dreams and ambitions to ensure our actions are helping us
to live a life ON PURPOSE!

Would you dream with me for a few moments?

Many of you know that a few years ago I covered my car in smiley faces and the phrases “Kindness Ripples,” “Peace Ripples,” and “Happiness Ripples.” Since then I have been pondering what it would be like to drive around the country to hang out with fellow ripplers and see if we could create some powerful waves of inspiration. I think in light of the many challenges that we are currently facing, the time has come to make this dream a reality. As a bonus, it would be a magnificently fun way to say THANKS to many of you for ten years of nurturing The Ripples Project!

This could be as simple as showing up in your city and breaking break at a restaurant with whoever shows up, or it could be as elaborate as planning inspirational presentations and trying to gather a few dozen or a few hundred people together who need a big splash of inspiration.

In order to encourage a “group conversation,” I have posted discussion topics on our Facebook & LinkedIn groups (see links below) and I need to hear from you! How could we make this happen? Where should I go? Can you help? If you are not yet a part of one of these online communities, this could be the perfect reason to join one because you’ll instantly have access to many connections with the RIPPLES groups there!
