PEBBLE

…Remember that the sun will rise tomorrow,
and remind yourself to breathe…
because you never know what the tide may bring in.
-closing lines from the movie “Cast Away,” submitted by Lisa Carlson

BOULDER

When you get into a tight place and
everything goes against you ’til
it seems as though you could not
hold on a minute longer,
never give up,
for that is just the place and time
that the tide will turn.
– Harriet Beecher Stowe, submitted by Maryann Rapposelli

PONDER

I had a quick trip to New York this weekend to a leadership conference
at Colgate University, and we spent part of our day exploring the
balance between reaching IN to take care of ourselves and reaching OUT
to connect with (and care for) others. As I read the above quotes, I
wondered: if it takes an external object like the moon to help the
earth seek the delicate balance between bringing the ocean tides in and
out, perhaps we also need to find something outside of ourselves to
help us maintain our equalibrium.

So many of the leaders and helpers I encounter in my travels seem to
forget that while we naturally let our ripples flow out and nourish
others, it is ESSENTIAL that our ripples sometimes flow inward to
nourish and heal our spirit. Check your tides: if you’re at low tide,
do something really nice for yourself this week. When you find
yourself at high tide, remember to reach out to someone else and be
their “moon” to help their tide come in!

And by the way, if you think librarians are a stuffy crowd, you
obviously have never spent a day with the crew from the Appleton
(Wisconsin) Public Library. They are a bold bunch of people–they even
paint blue skies and big puffy clouds in their library!

Peace to you all,

Paul
