_______
PEBBLE

Everyone will come to a point in their life when they have to choose
between what is right and what is easy.
-Albus Dumbledore (J.K. Rowling), submitted by Ryan K, Ashland WI

________
BOULDER

People often ask you, “What’s the most embarrassing moment you had in your
life?” Oftentimes, we try to go to a humorous place. But the most
embarrassing moments are when we fail to live up to the moral courage we’re
required to.
-Terrence Howard, submitted by Terry H., Oak Creek WI

_______
PONDER

When choosing between “right” and “easy” I urge you to remember that the
easier path doesn’t always stay easy. Often times when we choose the RIGHT
path it involves some extra effort up front and then later on down the road
we realize that our road is much easier because the hard part is over and
done.

Whether it is a big or small choice, whether it is for work or school or
home or somewhere else, I dare you to ponder your options and seek the right
path even if it requires more effort. No, ESPECIALLY BECA– USE it requires
more effort. You can do it, and you will benefit in the long run.

Make Dumbledore proud!

Ripples #570: How You Carry It!

_______
PEBBLE

It’s not the load that breaks you,
it’s the way you carry it.
-Lena Horn, submitted by Nicole W., San Luis Obispo CA

________
BOULDER

There is no person without faults,
none without a burden.
None is sufficient in himself,
none is wise in himself;
therefore, we must support one another,
comfort, help, teach, and advise one another.
-Thomas a Kempis (translation), submitted by Lois B., Calumet MI

_______
PONDER

You can handle your load if you carry it correctly. Back injuries often
arise when we don’t lift with our legs. Soul injuries can occur when we
forget to use all of our strength and all of our resources. That includes
bringing your best self to face challenges, and it includes asking for help
from the tribe of people you have assembled for just such purposes.

Today I wish for you the courage to ask for help and the strength to offer
help.

Paul… Read More!

Ripples #564: Reputation vs. Character.

who believe tiny actions create big possibilities

_______
PEBBLE
Reputation is the shadow: character is the tree.
-Abraham Lincoln, submitted by JDN, Amarillo TX
________
BOULDER
Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your
character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what
others think you are.
-Dale Carnegie, submitted by Steve R., Madison WI
_______
PONDER
Have you become a person that would make your grama proud? Do you make the
right choices when no one else is looking? What action could you take this
week to strengthen your CHARACTER?

Perhaps you need to speak up on behalf of someone else, or do the right
thing even if it isn’t convenient, or maybe find the courage to apologize
and make ammends for a past wrong.

You may notice that as your CHARACTER grows, so does the shadow called your
REPUTATION!

_______
PEBBLE
Are you going to drink from the well of life-or just gargle and spit?
-written and submitted by Patricia Clason, Milwaukee WI

________

You don’t have to take life the way it comes to you. You can design your
life to come to you the way you want it.
-Dan Zadra, submitted by Kristel, Bellingham WA

Life happens. Good stuff, blechy stuff, and everything in between.
Sometimes things fall into place so sweetly, and sometimes it feels like you
are sitting in front of a box from Ikea: a hundred parts to assemble with no
written instructions.

An optimal life isn’t perfect, and it isn’t always fun. It is, however,
ALWAYS worth it. I hope you can enjoy a thirst-quenching drink of life this
week and let it fill you up.

_______
PEBBLE
We have time for whatever we choose to do, so let’s own our choices!
-written and submitted by Dr. Mia Cary, Greensboro NC (& my sister!)

________
BOULDER
Every time you make a choice
you are turning the central part of you,
the part that chooses,
into something a little different
than what it was before.
And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, you are
slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or into a
hellish creature.
-C.S. Lewis, submitted by Lisa D. L’Anse MI

We are all busy, busy, BUSY! You probably have more on today’s to-do list
than you can fit in a week. I know, I get it.

We may not have time to get to everything we WANT to get done. We do,
however, have EXACTLY enough time to get to the most important stuff. We
have to choose what is important and then, as my sister states above in the
pebble: OWN OUR CHOICES! So make choices this week to accomplish much,
appreciate others, and add joy for yourself and those around you.

I had an brief but magnificent journey to the Colorado Rockies where I spent time with a few hundred RAs from the mountain states AND found a few minutes of solitude in the altitude as well.

A pair of turbulent flights has me “feeling poopy” (last week’s Ripples theme), so I’ll keep this brief and ask you to choose something important in your life and make a commitment to it this week. You can do it!

Ripples v9.27: Free (not Free!)
7/2/07: a free weekly splash from Paul & The Ripples Project

____________________PEBBLE ____________________

To be truly free, you must first be disciplined.
-source unknown, submitted by Jules G., Eau Claire WI

____________________BOULDER ____________________

Freedom is not merely
the opportunity to do as one pleases;
neither is it merely
the opportunity to choose between set alternatives.
Freedom is, first of all,
the chance to formulate the available choices,
to argue over them–and then,
the opportunity to choose.
-C. Wright Mills

____________________PONDER ____________________

As those of us here in the U.S prepare to celebrate our Independence Day, I want to remind us all that the word FREE has two different connotations. We sometimes use FREE to mean “no cost” and other times it refers to the concept described above: the opportunity to create and make choices. I am sure I am not the only one who worries that we tend to take our FREEdoms for granted, and we sometimes slip into thinking that they should not cost anything (cost = money, time, effort, etc.). Free isn’t Free!

In between the picnics and the sparklers and the fireworks, I dare you to spend a few minutes asking your companions what being FREE means to them. What choices are they most glad they have, and what responsibility do we have for paying to be FREE. Some might think of paying in terms of taxes to a government who protects and provides, others might view community service as a way to give back (and perhaps helping others become FREE).

Enjoy the many choices you have!

Paul… Read More!

I spent the early part of the week with a group of folks who do the very challenging and important work of helping people at the end of life. These hospice, nursing home, home health, and hospital staff provide an enormous source of support to those who are dying as well as their loved ones. By the end of the week I was out in Phoenix to spend a few days with my good friends at the U.S. Tennis Association who develop and promote the growth of tennis.

These are obviously different groups facing different challenges and opportunities in fulfilling their mission, but the people I met at both meetings were filled with dedicated and talented professionals who are making life better for others. While my topics varied for each group, it was easy to convince them all that what you get out of life depends a great deal on what you are willing to put in.

I dare you to practice the art of ECHOES & BOOMERANGS this week by putting out a little more of what you want and trust that it will come back. If you wish the world had more peace than it does now, go out and make peace with someone you are currently in conflict with. If you need more money, try giving a few bucks away. If happiness is what you seek, then spend some time making someone else happy. I believe that some will come back your way soon!

You may be tired of the election-related commercials and the phone calls and the mail….AND remember that our democracy works best when we all participate! If you are eligible to vote, DO IT! If you are not eligible to vote, motivate your eligible family, friends, classmates, co-workers, and neighbors to take time this week to DO WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN!

Speaking of voting, we need you to VOTE FOR RIPPLES this month! During November, we are asking each Ripples subscriber to choose one action in support of Ripples:
– submit a really great quote for an upcoming issue (see below for instructions)
– convince one co-worker or friend to join Ripples (see below for instructions)

We lost several hundred subscribers because of our software glitches earlier this year, and we would really like to end the year above 15,000 subscribers. We need just 400 new subscribers to get there, so PLEASE consider helping us find one or two more!

and take responsibility for what comes next.
-Dr. Sonya Friedman, submitted by Pat J., Waukesha WI

I am responsible.

Although I may not be able
to prevent the worst from happening,
I am responsible for my attitude
toward the inevitable misfortunes that darken life.

Bad things do happen;
how I respond to them
defines my character
and the quality of my life.
I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness,
immobilized by the gravity of my loss,
or I can choose to rise from the pain
and treasure the most precious gift I have:
life itself.
-Walter Anderson, submitted by Debra E., Ohio

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= PONDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o=o

If some big or small “bad thing” has happened to you recently, you certainly deserve to take time to do what you need to do: scream, cry, journal, complain, grunt, whine, drink (milk), eat (oreos), pout, moan, etc. Then it is time to stand up, brush the dust off, and ask what (fictional) president Jed Bartlett used to ask his White House staff on the TV Series “West Wing: “What’s next?”

I don’t mean to over-simply the healing/recovery part of dealing with the “bad things.” I am here to testify that sometimes it can take weeks, months, or even years to do the first part. Just make sure you know when it is time to take RESPONSIBILITY and move on!

Peace,
Paul
p.s. I am returning from my retreat this week and will be wading through the pile of correspondence from the last few weeks. I will have stories to share I’m sure!
