The fact is, that to do anything in the world worth doing,
we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger,
but jump in and scramble through as well as we can.

Next week I will be heading to Moscow, Idaho, home of the University of Idaho. The city and the university are hosting a special event along with their neighbors across the border, Pullman, Washington and Washington State University. “Finding the Center: An Action Oriented Human Rights Conference” is sure to be a full weekend of speaking loudly and listening clearly. I have been charged with kicking off the event and I hope to remind them that the most effective way to “speak loudly” is through their actions that encourage an appreciation of diversity. This is where I need some help from YOU!

The Ripples Project is about the gigantic power of tiny acts, so in addition to giving each attendee a Ripple card with an inspirational quote, I wanted to inspire them with YOUR stories of “speaking loudly.” Can you take just 2 minutes to ponder and respond to just one set of these questions:

A. Can you think of a time when you said or did something to speak up for another person or group?
What did you do? Why did you do it? How did it turn out?

B. Can you think of a time when someone said or did something to speak up for YOU?
What happened? Why was that important to you?

C. Can you think of a time when you WISH someone had spoken up for you or another person/group?
What happened? What could the person have said or done?

You can post your response on our community discussion board:
OR just hit reply and send us an email.

Thanks in advance for sharing your voice, and as always I’m sending you a bounty of….

We are being hurt by the myth that leadership is something reserved for a
few charismatic men and women.
In fact, leadership is everyone’s business.

Our lives, at times, seem a study in contrasts…
love and hate, birth and death, right and wrong…
everything seen in the absolutes of black and white.
Too often we are not aware that it is
the shades of grey
that add depth and meaning
to the starkness of those extremes.

I spent time this week at both Centralia College (near Seattle,
Washington) and Western Illinois University (near, er, not really near
anything!) at leadership conferences. During lunch at WIU, I was eating
with a group of participants who were posed this question: “How do you
define a leader?” As I listened to their diverse and thoughtful responses I
found myself struggling to compose a definition myself. I decided in the
moment that a leader’s role is to bring together a group of people to
achieve a common goal.

It seems the U.S. has come together in a strong way over the past few
weeks to form a team. A growing concern is that our country has become
a “We” only because we are united against a “They.” While I have certainly
been impressed with our ability to unite in the face of crisis, it concerns
me that we have demonized a “They” which is escalating the same kind of
dangerous hatred that culminated in the events of September 11. Here is
a challenge for our leaders: please help us find a way to come together
as a “We” without creating a “They!”

Throughout history, it has been
the  INACTION of those who could have acted;
the INDIFFERENCE of those who should have known better;
the SILENCE of the voice of justice when it mattered most;
that has made it possible for EVIL to triumph.

There were two men: one was 90 years old and the other 74 years old.
One day the 90 year old man was outside planting a new little tree.
The 74 year old man came over to the 90 year old man and said,
“Why in the world are you planting a tree at your age?
You’ll never live to see it get big.”

The 90 year old man said to the 74 year old man,
“We sure will miss you.”

To be able to shift from REACTING in life
to RESPONDING is very powerful.
To be able to know what happens to you does not make a difference, but
that what you do with what happens to you makes all the difference.
To know you have a conscious choice is of the essence.

The adventure of life is to learn.
The purpose of life is to grow.
The nature of life is to change.
The challenge of life is to overcome.
The essence of life is to care.
The opportunity of life is to serve.
The secret of life is to dare.
The spice of life is to befriend.
The beauty of life is to give.

I just wrapped up a truly exhilarating and utterly exhausting leadership
conference. Exhilarating because I enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting
new people. Exhausting because I poured every fiber of my being into the
closing address. The conference was on ethics in leadership, and I spent a
fair amount of time exploring our relentless pursuit of RIGHTS and our
apparent abdication of RESPONSIBILITY.

We have been hearing much about the failures of the health care system and
our quest for a “patient’s bill of rights.” I read in a Newsweek article
that the average American family spends 5% of their income on health
care/medical needs, and 10% of their income on dining and entertainment

I agree that we need patient rights, but what about patient responsibility?
I also understand our concern about losing our rights around gun control,
but what about our responsibilities?

If you have been concerned lately about your rights, make sure you are
spending some time pondering your RESPONSIBILITY. How are you involving
yourself as a citizen in your community?

We need you! -ptw… Read More!
