Ripples #696: A Spiritual Journey.

Ripples #696: A Spiritual Journey.
For our tribe of 31,587 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.

Whether we realize it or not,
we are always on a spiritual journey;
even when we feel most lost.
-Frank Warren (of the PostSecret Project),
submitted by Karla in Madison

The universe
is always speaking to us…
sending us little messages,
causing coincidences
and serendipities;
reminding us to stop,
to look around,
to believe in
something else,
something more.
-Nancy Thayer, submitted by Stephanie in Akron, OH

Believing in God works for some people, but not everyone.
Faith in a higher power is one form of spiritual direction, but not the only one. I don’t think you have to believe in God in order to have faith that their is something bigger at work in the universe. And I don’t think you have to believe that everything happens for a reason in order to find meaning in things that happen.

If you have found a form of spiritual expression that provides understanding, direction, and support in your life, I hope you can spend some extra time enjoying and possibly deepening that connection. If you have not, I invite you to be curious this week about any unexpected opportunities to connect with people, music, or nature: anything or anyone that could reveal a bigger picture, a different way of looking at the world.

At the end of the day faith is a funny thing.
It turns up when you don’t really expect it.
It’s like one day you realize that the fairy tale
may be slightly different than you dreamed.
The castle, well, it may not be a castle.
And it’s not so important happy ever after,
just that it’s happy right now.
See, once in a while, once in a blue moon,
people will surprise you,
and once in a while people may even take your breath away.
-TV Show “Greys Anatomy”, submitted by Megan W, Philadelphia PA

____________________PONDER ____________________

The word FAITH means different things to different people. It can be used to describe religious beliefs; it is also used to suggest confidence in or loyalty to someone/something.

FAITH is an important part of character–I think we need to believe in something larger than ourselves in order to be effective in our work and in our lives. Sometimes it seems we assume that everyone must believe in the same things in order to get along or work together, and that successful people must be able to maintain their faith despite difficult challenges. Successful teams need to be filled with people who hold a variety of beliefs, and each of those individuals (even the leaders!), will occasionally experience uncertainty. Diversity and doubt are both ultimately necessary to maintain and grow our faith, just as shades of gray and complete darkness help us to understand and appreciate the light.

What or who do you have FAITH in right now? If you have been doubting someone or something, spend some time reflecting on how you might be able to strengthen your belief or whether it might be time to adjust your compass and therefore alter your guiding beliefs: that is not necessarily a sign of weakness, and it could even be a sign of strength!

I can tell you one thing I have lots of FAITH in: the extraordinary power of RIPPLES and the 17,000+ members who spend 60 seconds each Monday morning spreading the Ripply faith! I count on you!

Hello my fellow Ripply adventurers!

I have returned from several weeks of rest, including a wonderful retreat into northern Minnesota (with great thanks to my friends Brian and Rob for letting me hide out in their cabin!). I feel well rested, and excited to jump back into my work as a trainer AND The Ripples Project too!

For the past few months I have been pondering about how we can be more intentional and more effective at encouraging ourselves and others to be more Ripply. I am not even sure exactly what I mean by “Ripply,” although it seems to have something to do with kindness and joy and love and helping and compassion and empathy.

So many of you have sent emails to say how much you enjoy receiving Ripples, and it seems obvious that you are also the type of people who send all kinds of good ripples out into the community and into the universe. I cannot help but wonder if we should attempt to harness this energy and focus it more purposely. How would that work? I do not know, and I am wondering if you might be interested in helping me explore possibilities. Maybe we could gather some people together to hold a Ripply town meeting and explore what it means to nurture and create ripples. Maybe a series of town meetings around the country?

What do YOU think could happen if a few dozen (hundred?) members of The Ripples Project community came together for a few hours or few days? You may email me, but an even more useful way would be to post a message on our discussion board. It may seem a little tricky at first because you have to create a username/password, but it would allow the entire community to be inspired by our collective vision.

I believe that in our constant search for security,
we can never gain any peace of mind until we secure our own soul.
-Margaret Chase Smith

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= BOULDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o

The soul is dyed
the color of its thoughts.
Think only on those things
that are in line with your principles
and can bear the full light of day.
The content of your character
is your choice.

Day by day,
what you choose,
what you think, and
what you do
is who you become.

Quick, secure your soul!

How? Well, that depends on you. Today’s pebble states that in order to feel “secure” we must begin with our soul. The boulder suggests that we need to begin with our thoughts, and move on to our choices and actions. I am going to spend this week “securing my soul” by posting positive words around my office. Words like ASTOUNDING and MOMENTOUS and VIBRANT. Even creating the list was, well, momentous! Perhaps you can create your own list of words to ponder? If that doesn’t sound interesting then brainstorm some other activity to help you focus your thoughts and choices so your SOUL will be more SECURE by the end of the week!

If you want to see my list, I posted them quickly here:

This week was a whirlwind of planned and unplanned reunions for me.
I began in New Mexico to help out with the NIRSA (Natl Intramural Rec.
Sports Assn) conference where I enjoyed connecting with old and new
buddies as well as spending some time in the mountains that I love so
much. I then rushed back to the midwest to hang out with my good
friends at MPI (Meeting Professionals Intl) Wisconsin Chapter and also
made some new friends at an event for rising leaders at Mercury Marine.

By the end of the week I was with my family, unfortunately on the sad
occasion of my father’s passing. Gary Zukav’s quote above captures
well the bizarre combination of joy and sorrow that wove through my
week. By the time I arrived back home, exhausted from the physical
and emotional journeys, the seemingly opposite emotions appeared
more complementary. I viewed them not as “good” and “bad,” but
instead simply as different ways of deepening my connections to others,
opportunities to remember that as human beings our souls exist
primarily to seek and support each other.

I hope you can take a moment from your crazy week to renew or
deepen a “soul connection” that needs attention in your life!

I finished my spring speaking tour with a three-day adventure in LaCrosse,
Wisconsin to be a part of the annual conference for the National
Association of College and University Residence Halls. I had the honor of
hearing a fellow speaker, Kathy Humphrey, give a transformational address
that is STILL bouncing around my head and my heart. As she spoke about the
SOUL of leadership, Kathy had us at one point chanting “It’s in the
KNOWING, It’s in the BEING, It’s in the DOING” and then she artfully
expanded those points into the heart (and soul!) of her speech. I hope
you’ll take a moment to think about YOUR leadership style. Which of these
can you work on this week?

I have so many more stories to tell you about this last two weeks of
speaking, but I have all summer to share little tidbits so I’ll say Happy
Memorial Day!
