Ripples v5.14: Ripples of CIRCLES!

By Ripples No Comments

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= PEBBLE =o=o=o=o=o==o=o

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, submitted by Stacy P., St. Cloud, MN

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= BOULDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o

He drew a circle that shut me out
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But love and I had the wit to win!
We drew a circle that took him in.
-Edwin Markham

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= PONDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o=o

Quick Action: think of someone who has recently done something that
irritated, frustrated, angered or disappointed you. For the rest of
today, imagine that you totally forgive them. Any time you think of
her/him today, gently remind yourself that you have completely let go
of the hurt just for today. Then, when you wake up tomorrow, you can
decide whether you want to return to the anger or be done with it.
There are, of course, some BIG things that this won’t work for. I am
guessing you are like me and sometimes carry SMALL things around much
longer than you need to. So, just try it out and see how it works!

Peace,
Paul… Read More!

eRipples v4.30: Ripples of OPENING DOORS!

By Ripples No Comments

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= PEBBLE =o=o=o=o=o=o=o=o

The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.
-Flora Whittemore, submitted by Mary G., Madison WI

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= BOULDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but
often we look so long at the closed door that we do not
see the one which has been opened for us.
-Helen Keller, submitted by Andy K.

=o=o=o=o=o=o=o= PONDER =o=o=o=o=o=o=o=o

I am hoping that you can take a moment today, RIGHT NOW, to think of
one door that has recently closed in your life and LET IT GO! Say
goodbye to that opportunity, and then ponder what doors may be
opening for you. You may be able to identify this new opportunity,
or it may not have fully presented itself yet. Just be sure to CLOSE
any doors marked “Worry” or “Anxiety” so you won’t hear all the
negative noise coming from those places!

There could be a remarkable door just waiting for you to OPEN IT!

Paul… Read More!

If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light.
Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness,
selfishness, and fears.
-Glenn Clark, submitted by Mary

Welcome to 2002! I began the year with a trip to Fennimore, Wisconsin
and the campus of Southwest Technical College to help the faculty and
staff kick off their year. I mentioned that over 80% of New Year’s
resolutions are broken within a few weeks. 4 out of every 5!

One of the best things you can do to increase your resolution success
rate is to focus on what you DO want instead of what you DO NOT want in
the coming year. Try this exercise and you’ll see that I mean: choose a
spot on the floor and stand on it. If you wanted to move AWAY from this
spot, there are many directions to choose from to move away from it. So
many, in fact, that it can be overwhelming. While standing on this spot,
choose another spot you want to move towards. When thinking about
moving toward that spot, there is an obvious direction that will most
efficiently move you toward the new spot!

Choose your spot and MOVE TOWARDS IT!

Peace in 2002,

Paul… Read More!

Worry gives small things a big shadow.
-Swedish Proverb, submitted by Lucia Patritto

BOULDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Worry is the misuse of the imagination.
When you have done your best,
await the results in peace.
-Audrey Woodball, submitted by Misty Lee Smith

PONDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I woke up this morning, full of WORRY! In addition to a bunch of
deadlines for various projects, I had not worked on this week’s issue
of eRipples and I wanted it to be a good one! I don’t even have an
good excuse of a busy week! It was a no-travel, “hang out and spend
time with an amazing assortment of really cool people and not have
too big of an agenda” type of week. So I sat down to my computer and
started sifting through recent submissions and my worries grew as
nothing was jumping out and saying PICK ME, PICK ME!

And then I came across the above quotes and I knew what I had to do:
stop worrying! Look at the time right now, and make a commitment to
not worry for the next 24 hours. My clock says 9:30am right now so
until 9:31am tomorrow, every time I catch myself worrying I am going
to think of these quotes and put off worrying until later! Join me,
I DARE YOU!

PEBBLE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles;
it empties today of its strength.
-unknown, submitted by Amy Sellers

BOULDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

We lie in our beds hoping for enough sleep
to repeat the do-do of yesterday.
We are propelled from our beds into a busy life.
Yet the real succulence occurs in the gaps, the in-betweens,
the unexpected moments of luxury in our souls.
-Sark, submitted by Elizabeth Russell

PONDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Okay, I’ll admit it: I worry too much!

It is a nasty little habit that has so quietly crept into my daily
routine that I am sometimes more comfortable when I have something to
worry about than I am when I’m worry-free. Not something too big,
mind you. Something small enough to be manageable yet big enough to
keep me from completely relaxing.

My best friend sat me down last week and explained to me that while
some of my worries are “big picture” things that I need to be
thinking about, most of them are insignificant fluff. Or even worse:
I worry about things over which I have little or no control. “Let it
go,” he said. “Let it go.”

Of course he is right and of course it is easier to SAY than to DO.
But let’s dive in this week, shall we, and try to worry less.

Peace,
Paul… Read More!

I have been seeking a way to “come down” from the high of a super
busy and exciting fall of many presentations in many cool places to
many amazing people. It gets me so pumped up that sometimes it is a
few days or even weeks before I can really relax.

I recently discovered a phenomenal relaxation technique I want to
share with you.
You have probably never heard of it.
It is quite revolutionary.

It is called breathing.

One breath.
And then another.
Perhaps a really deep one.
And then another one.
Ahhhhhhhh.

This week, your challenge is simple: breathe.

eRipples v2.35: Ripples of Challenging Interactions

By Ripples No Comments

version 2.35 [Monday, August 28, 2000]

PEBBLE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

To hold a grudge is to maintain an intense connection with someone you
might not want to have a relationship with in the first place.
-Francine Prose, submitted by Lin Hinds

BOULDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Life is like a journey taken on a train
with a pair of passengers at each window pane.
I may sit beside you all the journey through,
or I may sit elsewhere, never knowing you.
But if fate should match us and sit us side-by-side–
let’s be pleasant passengers, it’s a nicer ride.
-original source unknown, submitted by: Lisa Sinclair

PONDER ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

In addition to hanging out with some awesome teams in California and
Michigan this week, I also helped kick off the new academic year with a
crew of school food service workers by leading a workshop on working with
difficult people. We discovered that there is another word for “difficult”
people: “different!” Sometimes, these folks are a challenge to us because
they think differently or have a different personality or perspective.
When you take the judgment out of your assessment and just assess them as
“different” than you and not difficult or mean, it might be easier to
listen to their viewpoint and not take their undesirable behavior
personally.

And as 4-year-old Kevin said to me one summer at the beach after hearing me
complain about a fellow lifeguard who was a complete jerk: “Paul, I think
you should be nice to Dan. I bet he doesn’t have very many friends.”

P.S. Make more ripples! Please forward an issue to your friends with a
personal note today!… Read More!

REFLECTION ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I am only one,
but I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But I can do something.
Because I cannot do everything,
Does not mean I should not try

Being what I am.

PONDERING ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This week has been exciting: emceeing a black tie AIDS fund raiser,
keynoting a diversity conference for Wisconsin Education Association
Conference, and an exhilarating and SUNNY day with students and staff at
the University of Central Florida. I also gave a talk for the University
of Wisconsin’s Student Personnel Association entitled: “Too Much & Not
Enough: Communication Tools to Preserve Humanity and Your Sanity.” We
pulled out our business cards and brainstormed all the modes of
communication we could find on the card. We came up with all kinds of ways
to connect with other, yet we missed the most important one of all: they
physical act of handing your business card to someone. I dare you to spend
a few minutes this week connecting with someone LIVE instead of through
email, snail mail, fax, phone, voice mail, cell phone, etc.

Peace to you! -ptw
