I hope many of you are experiencing some semblance of spring–here in Madison we received a fresh batch of SNOW to help usher in the season! Despite the cold stuff on the ground, one of the ways that I know spring has been inching closer is the sound of birds! My morning walks to the gym have been increasingly punctuated with the happy tweeterings of those who eagerly sense the arrival of longer days and (barely!) warmer weather.

Perhaps we need to practice chirping too, so I have a RIPPLES CHIRPING CHALLENGE and the winner will get a big pile of inspirational goodies!!

I dare you to post a question or comment in the “Streams of Consciousness” section of our community website, and I urge EVERYONE to read and reply! Of the topics that are initiated this week, the one that has the most replies by Friday will be declared the “loudest” and its author will receive some treats.

So, put your creative cap on, imagine 13,000 fellow Ripplers lining up to talk……and ask them a question or make a provocative statement (use good judgement of course, and be sure to read posting guidelines if you’ve never posted before.

I’ve travelled a few (snowy) miles up the road from Madison to spend some time in La Crosse, Wisconsin with a credit union that is about to embark on a new journey and I think we could all adopt their adventurous spirit and declare a new direction for ourselves this week.

If you are facing some tiny or gigantic change at work or at school or in life in general, maybe this is a perfect time to remind yourself that while change can be challenging at times, it can also be a magnificent journey! Or maybe you’re feeling a little “blah” without enough change. Whatever the case, blaze a new trail and leave a path!

This week found me hanging out with a crew of fellow trainers up in
the Wisconsin Dells, exploring ways to enhance our effectiveness. We
agreed that the more FUN we infused into our presentations, the more
likely our students could retain and apply the information provided.
It may seem like an obvious point, but FUN seems to be reserved
exclusively for kindergarten classes these days! I dare you to bring
some FUN to a meeting or presentation or conversation you have
scheduled this week. Share some goodies, wear a wacky hat, or have
everyone sing a song. Will it be silly? Of course! And the smiles
will linger, I promise!

Speaking of fun, we have some REALLY fun new greeting cards in our
store that we designed just for you! Take a peek and remember that
your purchase helps us create more ripples!

I spent Columbus Day with the University of Michigan Credit Union
staff as we enjoyed a fun day exploring leadership and customer
service. At one point we discussed the difficulties that arrive when
we feel forced to do something we don’t want to do. I encouraged
them to be aware of the options they have in those situations. For
example, take some piece of your job one or your courses that you
dislike: you cannot change that it is in your life, but perhaps you
can focus on the options available. Maybe you can choose WHEN you
work on it, or WHERE you work on it. The people who “make things
happen” are not immune from doing unpleasant tasks; they simply find
ways to GET THROUGH the yucky stuff and move on to the adventures
they WANT to focus on!

Take a moment right now to ponder some OPTIONS you have in your life
and then empower yourself to make good choices and enjoy your week!

This week included a visit with the student facilitators of Central
Michigan University’s Leadership Safari and then (after a CRAZY day
of travel through Detroit on Friday) I spent Saturday evening with
new students at University of North Carolina-Asheville. As I bip
around to all these institutions of higher learning this time of
year, I am reminded that ALL of us are creating a growth curriculum
at the University of Life! Sometimes we get stuck with the “required
course” of disappointment or frustration but hopefully there is also
time for an “elective course” of adventures with friends or hobby
development or a weekend seminar on sleeping in! Whatever
combination of coursework you have this fall, I hope you can picture
opportunities to learn and grow!

I ventured back out on the road this week with trips to Minnesota to
hang out with a crew from US Link and then out to Salem, Oregon
(where it was 50 degrees and sunny!) to help out with an incredible
symposium for community organizers. With both groups we explored
personal empowerment techniques that could fuel our enthusiasm. I
think some people view enthusiasm as a personality trait that some
people have and some people lack. I believe enthusiasm is a
behavior, a skill that you can deepen with practice.

Do you need more enthusiasm in your life right now? Might having
more enthusiasm for a particular project make it easier to tackle? I
dare you to practice being enthusiastic toward that project today.
Even if you have to just pretend at first, I think you’ll find that
enthusiasm is contagious even within yourself. GO FOR IT!

Enthusiastically Yours,

After participating in a spectacular leadership conference hosted by
Clark College and attended by community college students from all
over the state of Washington, I spent a day hiking in the forest
mountains of the Pacific Northwest. I’ve heard many visitors grumble
about how gloomy and cloudy this part of the country can be….it
seems natives concentrate more on the SUNNY days and perhaps enjoy
the light more than other climates that take sunshine for granted.

You know, there are ALWAYS going to be cloudy days in our lives. We
cannot wish them away. And we must not TRY to wish them away! It is
those cloudy days that allow us to enjoy the sunshine so much! So,
if you find yourself in an overcast day this week, just know that
sunshine will pop back on the horizon soon.

I wish you deep peace this week,

WOW! Two weeks ago I mentioned the story of Keith and his cool idea
for helping people with Modest Needs; I had no idea how many people
might take it seriously and pitch in five bucks to encourage him in
his efforts. Well, the results are in! I returned from my Colorado
vacation to find dozens and dozens of envelopes! As I packed up a
box to send to him, I counted 159 contributions from over 30 states
and the District of Columbia!

I am so proud of us! I added my check for $795, as I promised to
commit five bucks of my own for each envelope that came in. I know
some of you pitched in more than five dollars, and some of you
donated money directly through the Modest Needs’ website–thanks for
those ripples! Thank you also to the folks who simply visited the
website or even spent a few moments thinking about the ripples that
are being created with this idea! If you still want to help, you can
visit his website (see below) to make a contribution directly to
Modest Needs. As of July 1, the IRS officially recognized Modest
Needs as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization which means that all
contributions that came in after May 1 are tax deductible!

I attended three conferences this week: one for financial educators who
work at banks around Wisconsin, one in Indianapolis on diversity issues,
and one on bovine leadership (okay, it was actually a conference for
Milwaukee-area college student leaders, but in Wisconsin we LOVE cows
so there was a fair amount of “moo-ing” going on!) While of course
conversations eventually included mention of the events of earlier in the
month, we agreed that it is important to recognize the opportunities for
growth that evolve from trying times. Several individuals shared
strategies which they and/or their organizations have utilized to move
beyond the pain and into new directions. It reminded me that many of my
successes in work and life began as responses to difficult times I
encountered along the way.

I hope you can spend some time this week deciding how you can grow
stronger from the challenges we are facing.
