This week I had the pleasure of visiting North Carolina (home of the
amazing Krispy Kreme Doughnuts!) to speak at an awesome leadership
conference hosted by East Carolina University. In a workshop on
motivation, we discussed the importance of seeking the right amount
of challenge when trying to motivate ourselves or others. If we are
not challenged enough, we get bored and lazy and our productivity
suffers. On the other hand, if we are facing too many challenges we
often become overwhelmed. It turns out we are not very successful
when we are either bored OR burned out!

The ideal state of motivation comes when we have enough challenges to
keep us on our toes, but not so much that we feel fried. If you have
been in a funk lately or if you are simply hoping to become more
motivated, try assessing your balance and see if you need a bit MORE
challenge (read a book, write an article, join a different group,
volunteer) or perhaps LESS challenge (drop some things from your
crazy schedule, take a long walk, listen to some relaxing music) and
see if striking the right balance might help light your fire!

I attended three conferences this week: one for financial educators who
work at banks around Wisconsin, one in Indianapolis on diversity issues,
and one on bovine leadership (okay, it was actually a conference for
Milwaukee-area college student leaders, but in Wisconsin we LOVE cows
so there was a fair amount of “moo-ing” going on!) While of course
conversations eventually included mention of the events of earlier in the
month, we agreed that it is important to recognize the opportunities for
growth that evolve from trying times. Several individuals shared
strategies which they and/or their organizations have utilized to move
beyond the pain and into new directions. It reminded me that many of my
successes in work and life began as responses to difficult times I
encountered along the way.

I hope you can spend some time this week deciding how you can grow
stronger from the challenges we are facing.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried
piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally the farmer decided the animal was old and the well needed to be
covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. So he
invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a
shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then,
to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the
farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.
With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something
amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s
neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it
off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey
stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out
of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a
stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping,
never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

I finished off June with a glorious excursion to the Pacific Ocean to
participate in the 25th annual Seaside Wellness Conference which
gathers wellness professionals from around Oregon (and around the
northwest) for four days of education and inspiration. One of the
workshops I presented was on dealing with difficult people and we had a
blast generating a long list of personality types that make our lives more
challenging.

One useful insight came as we explained that sometimes we make
situations worse by taking the personality traits of a co-worker (or family
member) personally. Sometimes those people are the way they are
because of something that happened a long time ago and it isn’t useful
(or accurate) for us to think that we caused them to be that way. It doesn’t
mean we always have to put up with negative behaviors, but it can help us
maintain our sanity by not taking it personally. Shake it off and take a step
up this week!

around this time of year, either for their own graduation or for
someone they care about. We have come to regard these festivities as
the final step in a significant educational achievement whether it is
a year of kindergarten or a decade of doctoral studies. Remember,
however, that COMMENCEMENT does not mean THE END! The first
definition in my dictionary reads “A beginning!”

Whether you are preparing to leave school, leave a job, or leave
another part of your life behind, focus a bit of your energy on the
end of that life chapter and focus MOST of your energy on the new
chapter you are about to begin!

This week found me spending some time with several friends facing
challenges. One is wrapping up a job search, another is dealing with
the end of a long term relationship, and two others are dealing with
big work-related headaches. All four have done an outstanding job
of finding both inner strength and external support, and I think they
have all made very smart choices. The only thing left is to enjoy
the flight, and await results! This issue of ripples goes out to
everyone who is taking a leap this week….GO FOR IT!

This weekend brought the opportunity to spend some time in Sarasota,
Florida with the staff and volunteers who help make the “USA Tennis
Pathways Programs” a success in Florida. Among other topics, we explored
the value of seeing the positive sides of the “yucky stuff” that inevitably
happens in our lives.

At the end of the presentation I was rushing out to catch a flight and of
course the only draw bridge I had to cross had to be “up” as I approached.
I was so frustrated to be stuck on a gorgeous waterway on the Gulf of
Mexico in the middle of a beautiful sunny day; I mean REALLY could things
get any more inconvenient? This delay was going to mean less time sitting
in the airport before departing for a 6 hour journey to California in the
cramped quarters of an airplane that was made for 100 people and seats 200.
Get it? I did too, luckily, and transformed the moment into a last chance
to marvel at the white sand and sparkling blue water.

I am wrapping up a string of adventures that included meeting United Way
folks in Indiana, college students and administrators in New York,
tournament directors in Florida, and an amazing group of recreational
sports folks from around the country at their annual meeting in Rhode
Island. I was reminded that these different groups share something in
common with ALL OF US: occasional bouts of insecurity that prevent us from
pursuing our dreams.

I dare you to take another step this week that moves you closer to a dream.

I just finished a spectacular weekend in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with a
hundred of that state’s best resident assistants. While many of the
sessions were designed to provide information and increase the
participants’ skill base, the most valuable component of the event I saw
was FUN. Pure, clean, loud, rambunctious FUN.

These compassionate helpers, like so many other professionals, often give
their time and energy to help others with minimal compensation. The key to
maintaining their sanity is to find time for FUN.

What can you do for FUN today? Read the comics, laugh with a friend, see a
movie, tell a joke, watch kids at the playground…..and enjoy it!… Read More!
