Ripples #598: Do What You Do!
For our tribe of 27,024 busy people who share encouragement and gratitude.
Nov 8, 2010

PEBBLE:
Be aware of what is in you.
Announce it, pronounce it,
produce it and give birth to it.
-Meister Eckhart, submitted by Terry, Oak Creek WI

BOULDER:
…..If we truly believe
in what we are doing,
we can move mountains,
we can change the world…
So, do what you do, whatever it is…
because without you,
who is going to make the signs,
or write the book,
or hug those who need it most?
-Ben Broadbent, submitted by Jill, Plymouth NH

PONDER:
As we inch toward the end of the year, you may feel like you are running
out of steam and overwhelmed with all the STUFF that needs to get done
before the holiday craziness begins.

This might be a good week to take a deep breath, find a few minutes to
relax and reflect on what you hope to accomplish in the remaining few weeks
of 2010, and then jump in with both feet to DO WHAT YOU DO!

Peace,
Paul… Read More!

_______
PEBBLE

The important thing is this: to be able at any moment
to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.
-Charles Du Bos, submitted by Linn W., Milwaukee WI

________

Those who are living in their highest light know that it is good to share
your life and your love, for we have, indeed, come together for a reason.

Here in the U.S. last Monday in May is recognized as “Memorial Day” to
honor soldiers killed during wartime. While it is for many of us the
holiday weekend that kicks off summer, most people spend at least a few
minutes thinking about those who sacrificed everything while serving their
country.

I thought this could be a good day to think about sacrifice and how giving
up something in the short term often leads to greater gain. Sacrificing
something to enrich the greater good does not have to result in our death,
nor does it even have to be painful. The right thing can even make us feel
good: donating a few dollars/hours to a community organization, defending
the honor of someone who is unable to speak up for herself, or doing the
right thing even when it is not the easiest or most convenient course of
action. Sacrifice is an opportunity for all of us to participate fully in
society, and to become our full, best selves in the process.

Anything less than a conscious commitment to the important
is an unconscious commitment to the unimportant.
-Stephen Covey, submitted by Betsy L., Welches OR

________

Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.

I had an brief but magnificent journey to the Colorado Rockies where I spent time with a few hundred RAs from the mountain states AND found a few minutes of solitude in the altitude as well.

A pair of turbulent flights has me “feeling poopy” (last week’s Ripples theme), so I’ll keep this brief and ask you to choose something important in your life and make a commitment to it this week. You can do it!

Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar
into four pieces with your bare hands-
and then eat just one of the pieces.
-Judith Viorst, submitted by Amy R., Downingtown PA

Maturity is the ability
to stick with a job until it’s finished;
to do a job without being supervised;
to carry money without spending it; and
to bear an injustice without wanting to get even.

There could be a project you are working on this week that needs an extra piece of “chocolate discpline.” Of course it can be difficult seeking your strength to resist temptation or to follow the path of most resistance and do the thing you NEED to do instead of the thing you WANT to do.

Remember that discipline is more of a SKILL than a personality trait and regardless of where you’re starting out, if you decide to practice this week you will be more disciplined on Friday than you are today.

_______
PEBBLE
Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has an idea.
It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off,
and does something about it who makes a difference.
-Nolan Bushnell, submitted by Linda H., Lincoln NE

_________
BOULDER
There is an infinite distance
between the wishers and the doers.
A mere desire is lukewarm water,
which will never take a train to its destination;
the purpose must boil,
must be made into live steam to do the work.
-Orison Sweet Marden, submitted by Linn W., Milwaukee WI

Has an idea or dream bubbled up recently? Or perhaps you have had one simmering for some time? Please don’t let it simply evaporate. Your mission this week, and you better choose to accept it, is to grab that Idea and experiment, share, discuss, prepare, and then use the energy of that LIVE STEAM to move forward!

Many of us are enjoying the holiday weekend and PREPARING for the fall semester. Whether your life revolves around an academic calendar or not, I hope you can take a few moments this week to think about a “very special thing” you might be called to do in 2009 and what you could do in the next few months to PREPARE for it. Baby steps, my friend, just take a few baby steps this week and see what happens….

Oh, and there is still time to help out with last week’s challenge! Just send a check made out to CENTRAL ASIA INSTITUE and mail it to Ripples for CAI, 1360 Regent St #342, Madison WI 53715. The Ripples Project Foundation will MATCH all checks received by the end of this week and forward them to Greg!

If you think of yourself in terms of a painting, what do you see?…

Is it possible to like yourself while not being completely satisfied with
where you are in life? I hope so!

I want this week’s theme to encourage you to explore new ways to improve
yourself without sending a message that you are not quite good enough right
now. Seek that edge between being happy with who you are and wondering what
possibilities might exist if you worked to improve yourself by adding a
skill or enhancing a trait or shifting your perspective in some meaningful
way.

Ponder it, and then do something!

Many of us are still enjoying the holiday weekend and avoiding work, and of course I celebrate that. I encourage you to take the rest of today to relax and kick back. Starting tomorrow, however, I dare you to jump up, get to work or school, choose a project that needs to be tackled, and DO. Think of the next 5 days, or 5 hours, or even 5 minutes as a most valuable and precious opportunity to move away from “thinking about it” and zoom towards becoming a DOer!

I dedicate this issue of Ripples to Marvin Becker, 1942-2008, who was most definitely a DOer. I was glad to know you, Marv, and I promise I will stop thinking about learning how to play sheephead and just DO it!

You have to decide
what your highest priorities are
and have the courage-
-pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically-
-to say NO to other things.
And the way you do that
is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside.
-Stephen R. Covey, submitted by Yani D., Salem OR

____________________PONDER ____________________

Last week we explored the awesome power of YES, so this week I want to balance that with the tremendous potential of NO!

Some of us are so incredibly good at finding a “yes” for things, that we forget the limitations that help define our humanity: you and I have a finite amount of time, energy and passion to share with the world and we have an obligation to the people and projects in our life to consider this limitation each time we are presented with a request to share our resources.

Remember that each time you say YES to someone or something, you won’t be able to spend that time and energy with someone or something else– so you will be saying NO to someone too! Instead of being frustrated by these limitations, I invite you to celebrate the opportunity to set some priorities and make sure you are spending time on the people and projects you value most.

If you need more help saying no, I compiled some information and links on this page:

Welcome to a few hundred new HARD WORKING Ripplers from University of Hartford and University of Wisconsin – River Falls. WOOHOO!

Monday is Labor Day here in the U.S., a holiday originally created in 1882 “to exhibit to the public ‘the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations’ of the community” (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_day ). Now it serves as a last hurrah of summer vacation before we all jump into the fall “work” season whether that is school-work or work-work. So take a moment today to appreciate all the HARD WORK you have completed recently!

Ooh, and get ready because next Monday, September 10, is FREE HUGS Day and hopefully many of us will participate! Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Hugs_Campaign. If you’re on Facebook, join this group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2211771066
