People speak of hope as if it is this delicate, ephemeral thing made of whispers and spider’s webs. It’s not. Hope has dirt on her face, blood on her knuckles, the grit of the cobblestones in her hair, and just spat out a tooth as she rises for another go.

I just gave a talk for some of my beloved P&Gers as part of their recognition of June as LGBTQ Pride month. The event planners and I had been working on the event for several months, trying to figure out how to help our allies understand just how bleak things seem right now for us queer folks while also providing a much-needed boost of hopeful energy for anyone who’s struggling today (news flash: LOTS of folks are struggling today. We decided to call the talk “Finding Hope in Hard Times: A Pep Talk for Pride”
