Ripples #1357: Heroic Choices

PEBBLE

Heroes don’t have to be perfect, you know?
They just have to make you think bigger about yourself somehow.

Heroism is not about your abilities, it’s about your choices, and we can all choose to do good in this world. There is heroism in giving up a couple hours a week to tutor a struggling student. Or speaking your opinion, even when it goes against the status quo. There is heroism in doing something that we feel in our hearts is right, when it would be easier to do nothing at all.

We’re often taught that heroes are fearless and flawless and somehow different/better than the rest of us. But what if heroism is less about grand gestures and more about the simple, precious acts like showing up, speaking up, and choosing kindness? We often underestimate the power of these small choices, but the truth is, they ripple. They help us all recognize and remember the good that exists within ourselves and in the world. It’s also true that some of the folks who witness these acts are then inspired to show up, speak up, and choose kindness themselves, which of course inspires even more people. And so on, and so on, and so on…

This week, consider the small ways you might already be someone’s hero — and the small choices you can make to be a bit more heroic in your own life. And if there’s someone whose choices have made them a hero to you, take a minute to let them know. Write them a note, shoot them a text, heck maybe even show up in person so you can give them a big ole hug and let them know just how heroic you think their choices really are.
