Ripples #848: Innovate!
Aug 24, 2015

There is no innovation and creativity without failure. Period.
-Brene Brown, shared by Kelsey in Fond du Lac, WI

If you expect courage, forgive first.
If you expect innovation, fail and learn first.
If you expect curiosity, ask questions first.
If you expect energy, take action first.
-Dan Rockwell, shred by Darcy from the beach in SoCal

This is the time of year when many of us are heading back to work and/or school. If you’re in this camp, I’m guessing that along with anticipation of crisp weather and colorful foliage comes hopes of achieving new heights of success and new levels of insights. We sometimes forget that so much of our maturity and wisdom grows out of setbacks and failures: the courage to succeed starts with the courage to fail.

Innovation is about upheaval, transformation, and breaking through to the next level. The pathway to innovation includes lots of twists and turns along with detours and roadblocks that make it easy for some folks to give up. Not only can these obstacles help strengthen your resolve and help you grow stronger, they often encourage creativity and luck because they require you to try new things.

If you want to pal around with innovation this fall, be sure to make friends with creativity, persistence, and failure as well. Together they will help you get where you want to go…and maybe help you discover places that are not even on your map yet!

Ripples #763:  Your Creative Life!
For our tribe of busy people who believe in
unleashing Ripples of compassion & kindness: uRock!
6 Jan 2014

To live a creative life,
we must lose our fear of being wrong.
-Joseph Chilton Peace, shared by Trish in Flagstaff, AZ

When I say “be creative,”
I don’t mean that
you should all go and become
great painters and great poets.
I simply mean let your life be a painting,
let your life be a poem.
-Osho, shared by Pete in Ouray, CO

Ok, kids….here’s the deal:  We’re a few days into 2014 and it’s time for me to get real with you. I’m convinced that you need to be completely and utterly and insanely creative about the possibilities that exist for you this year.  STOP THE PRESSES:  forget about a focus on the whole year (that was soooo a few days ago during New Year’s Eve).  Instead, let’s focus on this week or maybe even just today:  I dare you to worry less about doing it RIGHT or doing it PRETTY or doing it WELL.  Just unleash your best effort to experiment creatively and wildly with something at work or school or life.  Try something new, or try something in a way you’ve never done it before.

Make today the weirdest, coolest, awesomest poem you’ve ever written.

I assure you it can be delicious and nutritious!

What are you up to this week? Whether you are beginning a typical work week, taking a summer class, or simply on a break, I think you could make this week magnificent if you paused right now to imagine some remarkable possibilities. Be creative, be daring, be bold in your vision. Imagine it, tell someone about it, and then go DO IT!

Oh, and could I trouble you for a big favor? As I prepare for the fall, I would love to replenish my pile of quote submissions with some fresh quotes. If you have come across a good one lately, please consider sending it (along with the source and your name and hometown). If you have an extra moment to format it like the quotes above, that makes it even easier for me to cut and paste them into a future issue!

Please forgive my inability to select just one pebble and one boulder this week; all four of these quotes were just so, well, CREATIVE! I’ll keep this ponder short so we stick to the important Ripply rule: readable in one minute or less.

So do this: close your eyes for the next 60 seconds and use your IMAGINATION to create something realistic and really exciting that could happen today. Then open your eyes and spend another 60 minutes doing something to make it more likely that it could happen!

The last few weeks have been adventure-filled for me; besides addressing the challenges of our website and related technology (it seems we have them largely resolved–thanks for helping me thank both teams last week!), I have spent some time giving presentations in New Hampshire as well as several leadership conferences around Wisconsin. This weekend included a sublime reunion with my buddies from graduate school and their growing families: hours of chit chat and laughter and goofiness that will linger in my soul for a long time.

As I continue to learn and grow from a bounty of people and experiences (including both wildly fun times and gritty hard stuff), it seems easy to forget (and just as easy to recall!) that even the truly difficult challenges are more easily faced when I string together some really good times after I have faced a string of blechy times. Perhaps you could take a quick assessment of your upcoming week to see if there is room for more ARTFUL LIVING, even with all the crazy, unpredictable, frustrating, and delicious ups and downs.

Life isn’t always easy, my ripply friend, but I believe it is always worth it!

what you will discover will be yourself.

This week, we welcome some new credit union marketing folks from
around Wisconsin, as well as student leaders from Portland State
University. The topics I explored with these groups was very
different, but the focus was similar: trying new things is sometimes
scary, often uncomfortable, and always worth it! The quotes above
both mention “not knowing”–an unsettling prospect for many of us
control-obsessed overachievers, eh?

Our goal this week: strike out into the unknown–try something new,
take a risk, pursue an opportunity–even if you don’t know quite
where it will lead you!

p.s. If you have enjoyed reading Ripples, imagine what it would be
like to have a follow up conversation with other “Ripply” folks each
week. A forum to share what actions you’ve taken, to ask questions,
or to seek creative solutions to your challenges…..all of this is
coming soon!… Read More!
